SERENGETI NATIONAL PARK

This is the largest and most famous of Tanzania's parks, covering an area of 14,763 sq km, which adjoins the Masai Mara in Kenya. It is possible to see literally millions of hoofed animals, particularly wildebeest and zebra in the annual North/South migration, which is one of the world's great spectacles. There are numerous predators such as lion, cheetah, as well as giraffe and gazelle, eland, warthog and a rich variety of birdlife.

NGORONGORO CONSERVATION AREA

The entire Conservation Area covers approximately 8,300 sq km, encompassing several different ecosystems; vast plains, woodland, bush and crater highlands, and the Crater itself is about 20 km wide, being one of the largest caldera in the world and the abundance of wildlife on the crater floor is impressive. Olduvai Gorge, near the centre of the Conservation Area, is where many famous fossils have been excavated. To the west are the lakes Ndutu and Masek, which is a particularly good wildlife viewing area during the rains (Dec - Apr) and Lake Magadi is home to hundreds of flamingoes.

LAKE MANYARA NATIONAL PARK

Famous for its tree-climbing lions, this park is set in striking surroundings. The lake itself is to the east of the park and attracts thousands of flamingoes as well as an amazing variety of other bird species. The park vegetation ranges from savannah and acacia woodland to marshes, thus supporting a wide variety of wildlife, including elephant and hippo and giraffe. Canoe safaris have recently been set up on the lake, enabling people to get close to the wildlife.
